On the 10th of October, 2023, over 2 million Liberians went to the Polls to elect a President, Senators and Representatives of the Legislative Assembly. The Election was the 4th following the end of the civil war in 2003. Following an invitation from the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC) of Liberia, Mrs. Davidetta Browne Lansanah, the AAEA deployed a five (5) member Mission to Republic of Liberia from 6th -13th October, 2023.

The Mission was made up of a Deputy Chairperson and Commissioners from Ghana, South Africa, Malawi and Ethiopia. The Mission which was in partnership with ECONEC was funded by the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES).

The purpose of the Mission was to demonstrate the AAEA’s support to its Commission member and to provide peer to peer feedback through constant informal engagements with the leadership of the National Elections Commission (NEC) on the course of the election.

The Delegation held meetings with key Interest Groups including; the Elections Coordination Committee (ECC), West African Network for Peace building (WANEP), National Election Response Group and leadership of National Elections Commission among others.

On Voting Day, the delegation visited several Polling Centres within Monrovia including the St Peter’s Lutheran School, the Cathedral Catholic School, Paynesville Seventh Adventist School and the Mount Carmel Institute among others to observe proceedings and to witness the receipt of the Polling Centres Presidential, Senatorial and Legislative Elections Results at the National Tally Centre at the Samuel Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.

All in all the Elections were transparent, orderly and fairly peaceful. The AAEA commends the Chairperson of the NEC, Mrs. Davidetta Browne Lansanah and her team for conducting successful elections.
